Events and Talks

The Village Association organises occasional special events. We'd like to hold more of these, so we're keen to hear your suggestions and ideas!

Our First Special Event…

Garden Trail Leaflet

Jan Ashton's talk and slide show in October 2007 was a great success, covering a whole year of Troutbeck's wild flowers in stunning and detailed photography.

Our Memorable Second Event…

Memories of Troutbeck graphic

This informal afternoon 'get-together' was held in the Village Institute in March 2009 to share memories, photographs and memorabilia from Troutbeck's past. Katharine Brown's report and photos are below…

The whole afternoon had the air of a busy art gallery or the filming of an episode of 'Going for a Song'.

At least 80 people passed through the doors, and soon everyone was chatting animatedly, looking at old photographs, postcards, prints, paintings, books, manuscripts and other memorabilia.

People were trying to spot themselves in old school photographs… May Queen gatherings… football team photos… or snowy sledging scenes on Church Bridge 70 years ago.

'Guess the location' games also proved very popular, and there's still lots of detective work to be done on many pictures.

There was even a film of Holehird in 1938 (thanks to Ian Jones) where one of our villagers recognised her grandfather!

Thanks to the Village Association Committee and many others for searching out material, persuading people to show their treasures, and setting up the eye-catching displays.

A magnificent afternoon tea was provided too, so thanks also to everyone behind the scenes in the kitchen or who brought such delicious home baking.

We'd like to organise more events like these – and we're looking for suggestions, ideas and volunteers! If you'd like to make a suggestion, or would like to help, please click here.
